To:
PD Dr. Jakob Zinsstag, Swiss Tropical Institute, PO Box, CH-4002 Basel, Switzerland,
or by email to jakob.zinsstag@..., Tel. +41 61 284 81 39

Background and Aims of the Project
Substantial gains have been made in global health, including reductions in overall and
child mortality in developing countries. However, progress remains uneven and there are
growing differences in mortality, morbidity and disease burden rates according to
geographical region. For example, communicable diseases, maternal and perinatal
conditions, and micronutrient deficiencies cluster in the tropics and subtropics, and
contribute to delay the social and economic development. Improving the health and
livelihoods of the global poor could save millions of healthy life years, enhance equity
and alleviate poverty, and hence contribute to achieving the millennium development
goals (MDGs). Certain MDGs are addressed by global alliances and partnerships; e.g. the
control of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. Fewer efforts are placed on the so-called
neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), e.g. helminth infections and zoonoses. The focus of
this project is on the epidemiology and control of NTDs in semi-arid and humid contexts
in Central and West Africa.
The goal of this proposal is to deepen our understanding of morbidity patterns and
transmission dynamics of NTDs in two eco-epidemiological settings of Africa,
and to study the effects of control interventions aiming at reducing the burden due to
NTDs. This will entail the development of methods and analytical tools for demographic
surveillance of a highly mobile population in Chad, and a rural sedentary population in
south-central Côte d’Ivoire. These demographic surveillance system (DSS) sites will
serve as platforms to monitor changes in morbidity patterns following locally-adapted
interventions.

PhD position Neogeography: the challenge of channeling large

The University of Twente is an entrepreneurial research university, located in Enschede, the Netherlands. Organized over five faculties, the UT offers 20 educational programs ranging from applied physics, public and business administration, communication studies and diverse programs in engineering technology.

The Computer Science department of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) is one of the largest academic institutions in computer science in the Netherlands. It provides courses in Technical Computer Science, Business Information Technology and Telematics. In addition, the department contributes to computer science education within other academic programs. The research of the department, spearheaded by telematics and information technology, is part of the multidisciplinary research institute Centre for Telematics and Information Technology (CTIT). The department has about 270 permanent staff members and 1200 students.

In the Chair of Databases we have an open position for a PhD student Neogeography: the challenge of channeling large and ill-behaved data streams

Project description

In this project, we develop XML-based data technology to support the channeling of large and ill-behaved neogeographic data streams. In neogeography, geographic information is derived from end-users, not from official bodies like mapping agencies, cadasters or other official, (para-)governmental organizations. The motivation is that multiple (neo)geographic information sources on the same phenomenon can be mutually enriching.

Content provision and feedback from large communities of end-users has great potential for sustaining a high level of data quality. The technology is meant to reach a substantial user community in the less-developed world through content provision and delivery via cell phone networks. Exploiting such neogeographic data requires a.o. the extraction of the where and when from textual descriptions. This comes with intrinsic uncertainty in space, time, but also thematically in terms of entity identification: which is the restaurant, bus stop, farm, market, forest mentioned in this information source? The rise of sensor networks adds to the mix a badly needed verification mechanism for the real-time neogeographic data.

We strive for a proper mix of carefully integrated techniques in geoinformation handling, approaches to spatiotemporal imprecision and incompleteness, as well as data augmentation through sensors in a generic framework with which purpose-oriented end-user communities can be served appropriately.

This PhD position focuses on spatiotemporal data technology in XML databases and theory and support technology for storage, manipulation and reasoning with spatiotemporal and thematic uncertainty. The work is to be validated through testbed use cases, such as the H20 project with google.org (water consumers in Zanzibar), AGCommons project with the Gates Foundation (smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa), and other projects with large user communities.

What we ask

We are looking for a candidate with a MSc. degree in computer science, databases, geoinformatics, software engineering, mathematics (with a computer science specialization), or an equivalent degree. The work involves both theory (logic and statistics) and practice (implementation of the technology and experimental evaluation). The candidate must provide good communication skills, in writing as well as oral. Your main task will be to do research, but you will be given opportunities to acquire some teaching experience. The selected candidate will be embedded in a joint research project with ITC, Enschede, and will closely collaborate with a PhD candidate from that institute.

What we offer

We offer a full-time PhD position in a dynamic and international environment. The duration of the contracts is four years. The gross salary will range from € 2.042,00 in the first year to € 2.612,00 per month in the fourth year.

Additionally, the University of Twente provides excellent facilities for professional and personal development. In addition, we offer a holiday allowance (amounts to 8%) and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% (which is approximately an extra month of salary) and a number of additional benefits. The labor agreements are in accordance with the CAO-NU for Dutch universities.

Information and application

Information can be obtained from Dr.ir. Maurice van Keulen, email: m.vankeulen@....

If you can meet the above mentioned requirements, you are invited to send your application letter together with:

PhD Programs 2010 IMT, Institute for Advanced Studies Lucca

The deadline for applications is December 4, 2009 at 18:00 (Italian time)

Computer Science and Engineering
The doctoral program aims at preparing researchers and professionals with a wide knowledge about the foundations of informatics and about its applications to a variety of systems and disciplines, focusing on aspects of particular importance in the present context. The new version of informatics is changing the perspective of other disciplines and several aspects of common life, and is the target of very active research in the international scene.

Economics, Markets, Institutions
The program aims at dealing with issues in political economy, applied public economics, the functioning of industries and markets, the impact of macroeconomics on productivity and growth. A distinctive feature of the Ph.D. program is the integration of theoretical, technical, and practical expertise, aimed to educate highly qualified professionals, who analyze, plan, and manage concrete interventions of political economy. Theoretical methodologies and models are generated and tested, through the systematic investigation of the real world, with a distinctive focus on concrete observation of markets and their actors. At the end of the program, students are able to identify commonalities as well as distinctive characters of economies, markets, and industries.

Management and Development of Cultural Heritage Ph.D. in cooperation with Politecnico di Torino

The program trains both researchers and professionals, able to operate at the highest levels of management of Cultural Heritage and Landscape, in both public and private institutions. The program integrates concepts and methods from several domains (humanities, economics, law, information technologies, material sciences) in the analysis of cultural heritage and landscape. The program provides a consistent multidisciplinary path where students are provided with competencies which nowadays cannot be obtained but through particular self-training initiatives. The job market today has to rely on various professional figures - thus incurring conflicts and standstills in the decision-making process - or is forced to choose only one competence among all the needed ones. A distinctive feature of the program is the involvement of Ph.D. students in projects, both on local and international scale, so as to make them familiar with the complex management of cultural heritage and landscape.

Political Systems and Institutional Change
The Ph.D. in Political Systems and Institutional Change is a multidisciplinary course analysing, in a comparative perspective, institutions in their historical, political, sociological, economic and legal features. Special attention will be devoted to processes of institutional change. The Ph.D. aims at forming political analysts able to: plan and manage collaborative and integrated processes at the international level; analyse and assess policies and institutional settings at a supranational, national and regional level; confront the specific problems of countries in transition towards democracy and a market economy.
Duration: 3 years

Language: Courses and seminars are held in English. Foreign Ph.D. students are required to attend an Italian Language and Culture Course.

Classes begin in March 2010.

Early Stage Researcher or PhD Placement at Interbank Lending and Bank Risk Measure in Konstanz University Germany 2009

Proposed Start Date: September 2009 subject to finalisation of the contract

The Early Stage Researcher (ESR) in this project will work on measures to restore the interbank markets that are crucial for banks™ liquidity management, but mostly dried up during the crisis. The current external risk reporting of banks lacks credibility because the reported values at risk (VaR) turned out to be very small in relation to the reported depreciations on bank assets.

The project is divided in several steps.

The first step is to find out why the reported VaR were so misleading; is it because the underlying stochastic models are ignoring systemic risks, or because the time horizon of the underlying model is too short?

Second, can VaR be sufficiently improved to credibly communicate a bank's risk? If not, can stress tests be designed for that purpose? A more demanding approach is to combine different pieces of information that banks publish, which taken separately, might be insufficient, but when put together may be sufficient information for interbank lending.

This requires research on the synergies of different pieces of information and empirical testing. This research should be of a theoretical and empirical nature.

Third, the issue of quick changes in bank's risk through derivatives trading needs to be addressed.
Should banks report these big trades or should such trades be restricted to banks with stricter equity capital requirements?

Fourth, the ESR should differentiate systematic and non-systematic risk factors in bank risk positions to provide more precise insights into potential damages of lending to another bank.

Proposed Start Date: September 2009 subject to finalisation of the contract

Duration: 36 months

Financial Information: Salary plus allowances in line with Marie Curie FP7 requirements for ESRs.
